Paul Jackson

With his growling Fender Precision, flat-wounds, and an Acoustic rig, he is proof positive that few notes make the funk funkier! As the anchor of Herbie’s groundbreaking Headhunters, Paul Jackson, with drummers Harvey Mason and Mike Clark, plied some of the deepest grooves ever committed to wax in a jazz fusion format.

Rendering thick lower register motifs punctuated with economic upper register fills, Jackson’s deft command of rhythm and space steered Herbie’s funky, innovative ship on such seminal sides as  Headhunters  (1973), Thrust (1974), Flood (1975) and Man Child (1976), among others.
