Mark Bedford

“Hey you! Don’t watch that! Watch this! This is the heavy monster sound! The nuttiest sound around!” Among the most prominent, successful, joyous, and video friendly ensembles to emerge from the UK’s massive “2 Tone” ska revival of the late 1970s were six barmy lads from Camden Town London who appropriately dubbed themselves Madness. With his Fender Precision perfectly tweaked to further bolster the loveable lunacy of Suggs and company in concert and on record, bassist Mark “Bedders” Bedford rendered slinky walking bass lines and buoyant rhythmic passages accented on the upbeat with a decidedly punk attitude that moved a generation – literally! With over a dozen UK top ten hits, including such gems as “House of Fun,” “One Step Beyond,” “Our House,” “Wings of a Dove,” and “It Must Be Love” to cite a few – Madness has endured over the years despite various pop music trends. As such, Bedders is still on the bandstand with his middle-aged mates – so I advise that “you better start to move your feet to the rockinest rock steady beat of Madness … one step beyond!”
