George Porter Jr.

A giant of the instrument for over a half-century, George Joseph Porter Jr. is a founding member of The Meters (with Art Neville) and one of the forefathers of what we now refer to as “funk.” A composer, band-leader, producer, valued sideman, and endlessly sampled player, Porter’s iconic style is rooted in his unadorned Fender tone united with his absolute mastery of rhythm, melody and above all, space: you will not find an overplayed passage in Porter’s expansive body of work. His collaborations span Labelle, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Sir Paul, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson, Taj Mahal, and John Scofield to cite a ridiculously select few!
