Jeff Beck Group / Rough and Ready

Of all the Jeff Beck slabs which garner hosannas aplenty – and deservedly so, Rough and Ready (1971) and its 1972 follow-up “orange” album are oft neglected. The former showcased Jeff’s jarring jazz fusion yearnings whilst the latter platter, produced by Stax / Booker T guitarist Steve Cropper, was steeped in Memphis soul.

Bassist Clive Chaman served as the rhythmic and harmonic safety net - maintaining a resilient pocket amid Beck and Max Middleton’s riffage, Cozy Powell’s furious fills, and Bobby Tench’s trenchant purr.
