The Illusion / Together As a Way of Life

Waxed in 1970, The Illusion’s sophomore slab Together As a Way of Life is a lost gem from a bygone era worthy of rediscovery. Bassist Chuck Alder, who takes lead vocal on the album’s choice track “Angel (Angela)” is masterful throughout. Chuck renders passages inspired by rhythm & blues, jazz, and soul, and purveys fine upper register counterpoint akin to Sir Paul. Though The Illusion never garnered the commercial success they so richly deserved, they were among the best bands of their generation, and this record proves it.
