Blood Sweat & Tears / New City- In Concert

The mid-70s return of crooner David Clayton-Thomas couldn’t reverse dwindling interest in Blood Sweat & Tears, but to my ears, New City (1975) was a fantastic fusion of pop, rock, and jazz. My former teacher Ron McClure bonded his jazz pedigree with old school rhythm and blues for outstanding renditions of “Ride Captain Ride,” Allen Toussaint’s “Life” and Sir Paul's “Got To Get You Into My Life” along with Ron’s Grammy nominated instrumental composition “No Show.” The two-fer In Concert slab (1976), an import only back in the day, captures the New City era ensemble -featuring Steve Kahn, Don Alias, Larry Willis, Mike Stern, and George Wadenius, among others, in top form.
