Elton John / 11-17-70

Released as a bootleg stopgap, this collection culled from a radio broadcast at A&R Studios in New York City, is, to my ears, the greatest recorded live set of any era in rock. The triumvirate of Sir Elton, drummer Nigel Olsson, and bassist Dee Murray were incendiary on this night – and likely a lot of other nights as well in this configuration as they barnstormed the United States in 1970.

No overdubs nor no self-indulgent solos; astonishing chemistry; matchless interplay.  Pay close attention to Dee’s mastery of a volume pedal on “Sixty Years On.”
