Sparks / Big Beat

Cited by Cheap Trick’s Tom Petersson as a major influence with regard to tone and execution, Sal Maida’s stellar performance on the brothers Mael’s Big Beat (1976) is among the great bass records in a pop context that somehow slipped through the commercial cracks. Akin to Sir Paul and Brian Wilson, Maida plies passages which are simultaneously supportive and serve as melodic hooks. Says Sal to this writer, he had no idea that his work on this slab would be featured so prominently in the final mix.
