Ian Hunter / Overnight Angels

When I referenced Overnight Angels (1977) to Ian Hunter, he cringed. Though it was an album out-of-time, and (almost) out-of-tune thanks to producer Roy Thomas Baker’s misdirection, the compositions and bass passages are nonetheless exemplary.

Rob Rawlinson’s nimble fingered fretwork is given to thrilling grace notes, harmonic extensions, and glissandos – obviously inspired by Jaco, who made history with Ian the previous year. Ironically, Rob once replaced Mr. Pastorius on a session helmed by Baker.
