Jimi Hendrix / Band of Gypsys

I have great reverence for his studio sides and Mitch Mitchell, however to my ears, Jimi’s live Band of Gypsys (1970) was his most revealing platter. Drummer Buddy Miles (an acquired taste to some) and bassist Billy Cox afforded Hendrix an elastic rhythm and blues foundation to enhance Jimi’s genius. Billy’s repetitive soulful staccato passages coupled with an edgy tone grab the listener from the first downbeat. No wonder Miles was blown away – and wholly inspired - by this incendiary trio.
