"Happy New Year first of all…hope you have a million or two million more… "
I have great reverence for the studio slabs and Mitch Mitchell, however to my ears, Jimi’s live Band of Gypsys (1970) was his most revealing platter. Drummer Buddy Miles (an acquired taste to some) and bassist Billy Cox afforded Hendrix an elastic rhythm and blues foundation which enhanced Jimi’s harmonic and sonic genius. Billy’s soulful staccato pocket passages coupled with an edgy tone grab the listener from the first downbeat. No wonder Miles was blown away – and wholly inspired - by this incendiary trio.
