Herbie Hancock / Secrets

An absolute master of rhythm, space, tone, and articulation – it doesn’t get (much) funkier than Paul Jackson in Herbie’s Headhunter bass chair. Every side Paul and Herbie waxed is essential, however I’ll cite the lesser known Secrets (1976).  Though Wah Wah Watson provides the delightfully ragged slap passages on the opening cut “Doin’ It” – this is yet another Jackson work-of-art, melding jazz, rhythm & blues, soul, and Caribbean influences.
