The Kinks / Low Budget

As told to this writer, Jim Rodford’s advice to his beleaguered Kinks comrades upon his officially joining the band in ’79 was to give the people what they want: more Dave Davies! With Ray’s usually brilliant compositions, Low Budget (1979) was an artistic and commercial rebirth.

Dig Jim’s dancing lines (“In A Space”), octaving passages (“Wish I Could Fly Like Superman”), pocket grooves (“A Gallon of Gas”), staccato motifs (“Attitude”), and punk pluckery (“Pressure”). Raucous renditions of choice Low Budget cuts appeared on the Kinks’ incendiary live slab One for the Road (1980).
