Mark Colby / One Good Turn

Whomever conjured the term “smooth jazz” should be brought up on charges!  An overlooked gem from the fusion era, saxophonist / composer / educator Mark Colby’s sophomore slab One Good Turn (1979) also serves as a showcase for the late great bassist Gary King.

With most of the low end rolled off, Gary’s gritty tone, elastic slap passages, and in-the-pocket grooves boost Colby and his all-star cast of Steve Khan, Bob James, Hiram Bullock, Mike Mainieri, and Eric Gale, among others, who are all at the top of their game.
