Eric Clapton / August

As I recall in 1986 purists were downright distraught when Slowhand and producers Phil Collins and Tom Dowd opted for synths and (gasp) the five string bass of Nathan East! Yet Clapton waxed a fine pop blues record with trad licks aplenty to assuage the (hard) fact that modern times necessitated modern sounds. East grooves mightily with passages borne of his reverence for soul, rhythm & blues, and old-school funk.
