Duran Duran / Rio

To my ears, track for track, this slab represents one of the greatest overall bass performances of any player in a rock context by one of rock's most inexplicably underrated bassists. Inspired by Chic’s Bernard Edwards and Berlin-era Bowie bassist George Murray, John Taylor’s chorus laden Aria Pro II monster grooves function as irresistible melodic hooks. Fusing dance, rock, and pop with a signature tone and deft articulation, “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” “New Religion,” “My Own Way,” and “Last Chance on the Stairway” percolate with killer Jaco-esque grace notes.
