Elton John / Tumbleweed Connection

From the romantic rustic album art to the enduring magnificence of the compositions and performances; to my ears, Tumbleweed Connection (1970) stands as Sir Reggie and Bernie’s preeminent collection among their canon of multiple masterworks.

Save for Dee Murray’s convincing debut on the cut “Amoreena,” the bassist herein is peerless session ace Herbie Flowers. Herbie’s contrapuntal passages on “Country Comfort,” soulful phrasing on “Ballad of a Well Known Gun,” plucky upper register motifs and thundering glissandos beneath “Burn Down the Mission” are the stuff of legend.

Behold the best of their generation on the cusp of greatness.
