Ian Dury / Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

It is a rite of passage for players of my generation.

The incomparable Norman Watt-Roy’s slippery smooth rapid-fire staccato sixteenth-note patterns to this delightfully naughty Ian Dury classic is a study in melodic expertise, rhythmic flair, and, of course, virtuoso technique.

To my ears, Norman's low end opus rates among the signature bass passages of the era, comparable to Jaco’s “Teen Town.”  Waxed in ’79, it remains watershed in 2017.
