Leon Thomas / Spirits Known and Unknown

One of the truly great soul jazz slabs of any era, Leon Thomas' 1969 solo bow boasts bassists Cecil McBee and Richard Davis, along with Roy Haynes, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Leon's frequent bandleader Pharoah Sanders.

Cecil and Richard are all about the groove as evidenced in "The Creator Has a Master Plan," "Song For My Father," and "Echoes."

Deeply inspired by Leon and Pharoah, Carlos Santana brought Thomas into his band a few years later to wax the watershed Welcome (1973) collection with another virtuoso player, the late Doug Rauch.
