David Liebman / Doin' It Again

Go figure why some discs simply fly under the radar. This sizzlin' ’79 slab credited to The David Liebman Quintet -featuring drummer Adam Nussbaum, trumpeter Terumasa Hino, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Ron McClure, and the bandleader on tenor, soprano sax - brilliantly traverses post-bop and fusion.  It sounded to my ears that Ron was blending a chorus / flange effect for the upright and electric - which was vogue back in the day - however he informed me upon reading this essay that no electronic devices were used on either bass! Regardless of my "ears" or lack thereof, Ron's tone is perfect - as usual. For hardcore jazz fans; the collective harmonic and improvisatory virtuosity of all the players is prominent. Would love to hear an expanded edition of this platter with alternative takes. For casual jazz fans; the grooves and melodies are irresistible.  Go figure…
