Allman Brothers / Win, Lose or Draw

Panned upon its1975 release amid turmoil within the Brothers' ranks, to my ears, Win, Lose or Draw was a winner of a slab.  Richard Betts delivers three commendable compositions, including the majestic instrumental "High Falls."

Gregg's brilliant reading of Muddy Waters' "Can't Lose What You Never Had," and the title track would have fit perfectly on his stellar Laid Back (1973) collection. Butch, Jaimoe, and Chuck Leavell are masterful as usual.

Throughout this song-cycle, the late great bassist Lamar Williams - using a plectrum carved from a Clorox bleach bottle - moves fluently from the pocket to counter melodic foil. Critics be damned, this is a classic Allman Brothers Band platter!
