Amid the psychedelic Brit-pop bombast, anthemic compositions, and catchy rock tabloid headlines, lurked The Verve bassist Simon Jones.

A skillful pocket and melodic player with a warm tone, Jones anchored his mates from their early extended jam inclinations to their eventual emergence as a muscular alt-rock quartet.

Pity guitarist Nick McCabe and crooner Richard Ashcroft were oft at loggerheads – this lot could have waxed a lot more classic platters.  Bittersweet indeed…
