Starship / We Built This City

“Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio…” Aside from Los Del Rio’s “Macarena” I’d be hard pressed to recall a pop single that has been lambasted beyond reason as Jefferson-less Starship’s “We Built This City.” Dig bassist Pete Sears’ funky pastel popping and slapping in tandem with Peter Wolf’s (not the wooba gooba J. Geils Band singer) synth- keyboards! This track not only boasts a killer dance groove, but you’ve got poodle coiffed Mickey Thomas and Liz Taylor look-alike Grace Slick crooning Bernie Taupin’s cheeky libretto. Big hooks, big hair, big deal! It was 1985 after all!  Coda: among this tune’s official detractors included Rolling Stone, Blender, and GQ – three shamelessly mainstream, corporatized sell-out publications that should have called it a day long, long, long ago.
